Volunteer for World Vision 30Hour Famine Camp

I wanted to blog on Friday.. but didn't.. den now forgot wat i wanted to write.. Anyway.. Sunday went to Tampines St 82.. Volunteered for the World Vision 30Hour Famine Camp as Facilitators for the students collecting newspapers and old clothings for the poor children in Sri Lanka, Cambodia, India... n more countries.. Actually thought we were just facilitators! Turned out we were the collectors! s Jun Yun and I were assigned to different groups, we went to the location separately..

I thought she would be late as when I took 72, it was always a long journey to Tampines.. Turned out she was just on time while I took the wrong bus and had to waste $$$ on a taxi trip.. I was supposed to take 23 or 65 to Tampines and then change to take 293 to my destination but turned out that i took the wrong direction.. Took 65 to Harbourfront!!! Den had to speed taxi down.. How dumb..

We reached there only 8 of us.. from 2 groups.. Supposed to be each group at least 8 people covering 3 to 4 blocks each.. Turned out so many people didn't turn up.. I feel that they should have at least contacted the person-in-charge.. So that they can organise back up people.. Jun Yun's group only had her and the group IC only..

In addition., the IC's contact was not given.. Anyway, they all transpired by e-mail and it was said that some people do not check e-mail often and therefore missed the event.. The ICs could have contacted the group members the previous night to remind them of the event the next day.. At least would have a clearer idea of the attendance rate.. This event has been on for a few years already, surely someone would have known the problem and tried to deal with it?? Hmm..

Wendy and Kenny were the two ICs.. We combined as we were taking blocks 842B to 842H.. 7 blocks and only 8 of us.. And each block had 16 storeys.. To be finished in 5 hours.. Quite a challenge.. My group had Shannon and Yi Zhen.. We all knew no one here.. The other group were 3 gal frens who came together.. So it was set that the 2 teams take alternate levels, we finish 1 block together then move on to the next block..

As we started at 9am, some families would not wake up so early on a Sunday so there wasn't much newspapers at first.. The 3 of us went door-to-door together.. Then when there was a collection, we bring to the lift then go back to knocking the doors again.. So quite slow at first.. Then we changed to 1 person knock 1 door.. Den at the 3rd block, one person in charge of 1 level.. But some families had super lots of newspapers and had to take to the lift and back to the house again several trips.. Tiring..

Got 1 family there were 2 macho guys ordered to bring out the newspapers by their mum.. The younger brother, probably my age, actually used his foot to push the bag of newspapers out!And look at me carrying it up! How rude! Even if I said i didn't need help he could still carry it out of his house for me too rather than kick it out!! Hmm..

Den continued on lugging and knocking on doors.. My sprained ankle acted up again.. So was super tired when we finally finished by 1pm! Didn't care about dirtiness and just sat down on the corridor floor.. Since carrying all the newspapers already made me smelly and dirty.. Hahah..

Jun Yun's group got conned by the Karang Guni Man!!!!! They posed as World Vision staff and helped ferry them to another group they wanted to combine with ( Both groups had little people) but were denied by HQ and then ferried them back to their assigned location, and made off with their collections while Jun Yun and her IC went door-to-door!! How Mean!!! This collections were meant to help the poor children yet the garung guni take away for their own profits! N 1 family had even donated a carpet for World Vision! Jun Yun was so angry.. Hmm.. Really learned alot this session..

Den we went to Tampines Mall for Lunch.. and went home, bathed and napped and had dinner..
